What Is Pointing & Re-Pointing?

Brick pointing and repointing are crucial maintenance processes employed in the upkeep of brick structures, such as buildings, walls, or chimneys. Pointing refers to the external application of mortar to the joints between bricks, enhancing structural integrity and weather resistance. Over time, exposure to environmental elements and natural wear can cause the mortar between bricks to deteriorate, leading to gaps and weakening the structure.

What Causes Poor Pointing?

Weathering: Exposure to harsh weather conditions, such as rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles, can erode the mortar between bricks. This weathering effect weakens the mortar, leading to its deterioration.
Age: As buildings age, the original mortar used in construction may not have the same durability as modern materials. Over the years, it can become brittle and lose its adhesive properties.
Settlement: Buildings naturally settle over time, causing slight shifts in the structure. These movements can lead to cracks and gaps in the mortar joints, compromising their effectiveness.
Biological Growth: Moss, algae, and other biological growth on the brickwork can accelerate the deterioration of mortar. The presence of these organisms can trap moisture and contribute to the breakdown of the mortar.
Pollution: Air pollution, particularly in urban areas, can deposit corrosive substances onto the brickwork. This can accelerate the decay of mortar joints and contribute to the need for repointing.
Poor Construction Practices: In some cases, inadequate construction techniques or the use of substandard materials during the initial construction of the brickwork can contribute to premature mortar deterioration.

Their work was absolute quality, they always arrived prior to the time they said they'd be there, they always cleaned up at the end of the day (including neighbours houses and cars) and on top of that, both were polite and could hold a conversation.
As a result of having their own scaffold tower, they were also a lot cheaper than their nearest competitor.
